Bar Josefa (A Mata)

Although it’s a bit off the beaten path of O Camiño dos Faros, we can’t help but recommend this other temple of home-style cooking on the Costa da Morte: Bar Josefa in A Mata.

Bar Josefa is run by Anita, who inherited it from her mother, Josefa. It has been around for over 50 years, making it the go-to place for home-style food in the area. It’s authentic, traditional cooking, with potas simmering on the wood stove for hours, with no room for modernity.

Some of their specialties are homemade empanadas, both cod and chorizo, and bolos preñados (fried bolo). They also make delicious potato omelets. Their game dishes, lamb, and goat are known throughout the area. You can also try all kinds of rice dishes.

If you visit in winter, the Galician stew is amazing. Ham, cap, ribs, bacon, beef, chicken, turnip greens, chorizo, potatoes… just thinking about it makes our mouths water. And to top it off, the filloas. Don’t miss this delicacy.

And if you still have some room, some homemade desserts will round off this culinary experience, a tribute to our grandmothers’ traditional cooking that should never be missed.
