The Ethnolulic Museum of Galicia (MELGA) is a permanent museum whose fundamental mission is the conservation, research, and dissemination of Galician cultural heritage related to traditional games, traditional sports, and the history of toys. It also displays objects and pieces of great interest from Spain and from peoples and regions around the world.
The MELGA is a space dedicated to the playful past that serves as an educational tool for present and future generations, where a multitude of activities and events are organized annually.
Located in the heart of nature, in a modernist building, it has an exhibition area of approximately 800 square meters, displaying more than four thousand pieces from the private collection belonging to the Ricardo Pérez y Verdes Foundation. It also has a 1,000-square-meter playing field and ample visitor parking.
The MELGA houses the pieces of a unique collector: Ricardo Pérez y Verdes. A native of Ponteceso, he donated to the Ponteceso City Council through his Foundation all the objects related to the game and sport that he has acquired throughout the world during his constant travels for more than thirty-five years. A tireless promoter, organizer of exhibitions and championships, an entertaining lecturer, a university professor with a long research career, a combative ball player, a writer, an international volleyball coach and an enthusiastic popularizer, the life of Ricardo Pérez y Verdes is forever linked to traditional Galician games and sports. Their constant dedication and work are now available to all visitors to the MELGA.
This room displays most of the traditional games and sports from Galicia and other Spanish autonomous communities, along with a gallery of Galician champions in these disciplines. There is also a special section dedicated to the playful world of our illustrious bard Eduardo Pondal, creator of the lyrics of the Galician Anthem. We will also add some displays featuring the most representative games from other nationalities around the world. A multifunctional hall where, depending on the occasion, various exhibitions, workshops, conferences, musical concerts, etc. will be held simultaneously, where traditional games and sports are the main activity.
This hall displays, chronologically, from prehistory to the present day, the historical evolution of games and sports throughout the ages and among ancient civilizations. It also highlights current games and sports, as well as the ancient and modern Olympic Games. As in the previous hall, there is a gallery of Galician world, Olympic, and Paralympic champions.
